Becoming a Pass it! Driving Instructor: The Steps to Follow
Step 1: Part 1 – Theory Test
This is an advanced theory test that requires thorough preparation. It is a self-paced home study course, part 1 training will be included. The test consists of two sections:
1. Multiple choice questions: You need to answer 85 out of 100 questions across four categories, with a minimum of 20 correct answers in each category. The topics include road procedures, traffic signs, car controls, pedestrian and mechanical knowledge, driving tests, disabilities, the law, publications, and instructional techniques.
2. Hazard perception: You will watch 14 video clips, each containing a developing hazard. You will be scored on a scale of 0 to 5 based on how early you identify the hazards. One clip will have two hazards, worth 10 points. To pass this section, you need to score 57 out of 75.
Step 2: Part 2 – Driving Ability Test
You can only take this test after passing part 1 of your driving instructor training. The test evaluates your driving skills in different road and traffic conditions, including motorway and dual carriageway driving. It consists of the following components:
1. Eyesight test: You must read a number plate from a distance of 27.5 meters.
2. Show me/tell me questions: You will be asked 5 questions from a pool of 19. Wrong answers result in driver faults; only 6 faults are allowed throughout the test.
3. Practical driving: The drive lasts approximately one hour and includes a 20-minute independent drive using a Sat Nav, traffic signs, or directions, as well as potentially an emergency stop and two of the following manoeuvres: forward bay park, pull over on the right, reverse bay parking, or reverse parallel parking. You can accumulate up to 6 driver faults, but no serious or dangerous faults. You have a maximum of 3 attempts to pass this test.
Step 3: Part 3 – Final Examination
To attempt this test, you must have passed part 2 of your driving instructor training. You have two options:
1. You can take the final exam directly. You are allowed a maximum of 3 attempts. The exam involves giving a real driving lesson while being observed by an examiner from the back seat. The lesson should last around 1 hour, focusing on client-centred learning techniques and helping the student achieve their goals. The examiner will assess your performance in three main areas: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching and learning strategies. To pass, you must score at least 31 out of 51, with a minimum of 7 in the risk management section.
2. Trainee Licence: Alternatively, you can opt for a trainee licence, which allows you to instruct for six months before taking the final exam. To be eligible, you must complete a total of 40 hours of instruction. During the first three months or before your first attempt, whichever comes first, you must either complete an additional 20 hours or have 25% of your lessons supervised.
Please note that the trainee licence is intended for gaining experience, not for earning money, and you cannot charge full price for lessons during this period.
